Justin's Piano Concert

Justin performed his first piano concert on a Steinway grand piano at the Shinjuku Bunka Center today. He has been learning piano for three months since January this year. He enjoys playing the piano especially when all of us gather around to hear him practise his pieces.

Below is the recording of him playing 2 short pieces from memory.

The concert lasted for 2 hours. Jonathan was quite attentive till the last half an hour where he began to feel restless. After the concert ended, all the participants gathered on stage for photo taking.

A big thank you to Kai, Justin's teacher, for preparing him for the concert in such a short time. After the concert, Justin asked me if he would still be having any more lessons. I asked him if he wanted anymore and he said yes. (*Smiles*)

The boys' artwork

I attended Japanese Day celebration at Justin's school today. The kids were to dress in Japanese themed clothes. Apart from kimono, happi coat, ninja costumes, other interesting ones include: boy in a sumo suit, japanese pancake head-gear, and teacher dressed as a school girl with super short skirt (and yes, with a blonde wig).

There was a shishimai (lion dance) performance at the morning assembly. The day was packed with exciting activities and Justin enjoyed learning about Sumi-e (Chinese :
水墨画). His class had a workshop on Sumi-e and he had a chance to paint using a chopstick and ink.

During lunch, there was also a Japanese buffet where the kids were treated with tuna mayo and cucumber sushi rolls made by parents.

Jonathan has been bringing back things which he does in school too. My favourite ones are his spring chick and Hinamatsuri (Doll's Festival) drawing. His teacher says that he is a perfectionist at art activities, copying the teacher's examples perfectly every time.
