The Railway Museum

It was a rainy Saturday so we decided make a trip to The Railway Museum. The museum is conveniently located at Tetsudo-Hakubutsukan Station.

Outside the museum

The kids spent the most time at the History zone (1st floor) which displayed 35 different types of carriages and locomotives since Meiji era. They ran in and out exploring the trains from electric railcars, through passenger carriages to shinkansen.

Class Kuha 181 Electric Railcar

In the middle: Class C57 Steam Locomotive

Good news for train lovers - right in the middle of the hall is a fully operational turntable. The turntable operates everyday at 12pm and 3pm, complete with the steam whistle blowing. We missed the show because we arrived at the museum at 4pm.

2nd floor : Railway History Chronological Table

Japan's largest railway model diorama

Fixing miniature trains

Overheard Papa telling the kids : "He has the BEST job in the world." Now you know why the kids are so fascinated by trains and models.

Tomica Exhibition

There are other areas which we didn't have time to explore within the two hours before the museum closed. The Learning Hall, mini-shuttle train service from the North Wing to the Park Zone, miniature operating train (charges apply). Nevertheless, the boys were happy. We had dinner at Gusto family restaurant before heading back home.
